Competition has become more global and technology has brought lot of automation in the way we do business today.  Increasing use of AI , robotics and analytical tools in almost every business is one such example.  This is making survival really challenging for every business and its people. To add to it , fast changing economic equations and pollical environment across the globe is adding fuel to the already lit fire.

 To be successful, every business organization requires to undergo cultural change so that its people could adjust to those changes. This requires their people to think quicker, work intelligently, imagine broader and acquire new skills to be able to survive.  In these circumstances, Leaders` role becomes very important as they can overcome these challenges and sail their people and the organizations through the troubled waters to the success.

Today , We shall therefore require more leaders who can establish a purposeful vision for their teams and a sense of ethical values for their people and the organizations they lead. Earlier leadership theories mentioned that Leaders are born. These theories advocated that people were genetically populated with special characteristics that made them more likely to end up in leadership roles. However, I strongly believe that a person can be transformed into an effective and winning leader through learning and experience. Now this view is also being supported by twin theory that found that genetic factors only accounted for 30% and the rest 70% was acquired leadership attributes/skills through continuous learning. While there are people who seem to be naturally endowed with more leadership abilities than others, good news is that people can learn to become leaders by improving certain leadership skills.

So before we actually know what are those skills, we need to understand the difference between a skill and knowledge. You can get knowledge through a class room course or reading a book but you need to practice the knowledge to acquire the skill. The only way to become a successful leader is acquire your leadership skills through deliberate and sustained practice. It`s an ongoing process whereby you acquire those skills through perception, practice and experience over a period of time. Please remember, It`s an ongoing and continuous process.

So I can conclude that leadership is an art rather than a science. It is a set of innate traits, refined and perfected over time with a combination of education, training and experience. History is full of people who while having no previous leadership experience, have stepped to the fore in crisis situations and persuaded others to follow their suggested course of action. They possessed traits and qualities that helped them to step into roles of leadership. Steve Jobs who rose from being an ordinary leader to become a strong winning leader is a classic example of someone who was probably not born to be a leader.

Leaders would need to identify and implement cultural changes that organizations and their people have to undergo due to changes in the external environment. Delay in doing so may trigger their organizations to fail. Covid-19 is one such situation where you can see many organizations around the world tumble down because their leaders couldn’t understand the change and take timely actions.

2. Unable to build people relationship:

They were unable to develop long lasting relationship with their teams as they failed to invest in their personal and professional growth. It’s very important to take care of their needs and try to fulfil those both personally and professionally. Trust and Honesty go long way in building strong relationships with your people which really help you to succeed as leader. 

3. Lack of Emotional Intelligence

They lacked emotional intelligence and hence were not able to communicate effectively with their teams. As leaders, you need to understand the perspective of each one in your teams. There 5 elements of emotional intelligence viz. self-awareness, self-regulation, self – motivation, empathy and self- management. Each one helps the leaders to get closer to their teams.

 4. Lack of Passion to Win: 

They are not passionate to win and allow hardships to overcome them. Covid-19 have failed many as leaders and those have dared to think out of the box and have adapted to new normal are able to succeed as leaders.

5. Failure to Learn and Grow Every Day:

They fail to learn and grow every day. If you `re trying to lead today based on what you learned in the past , you can never get the success you`re looking for. To get to the success ladder, you need to upskill yourself. Unlearn to learn new skills is the success mantra.
